Habitat for Humanity
Born out of student discussions, a partnership between each year’s junior class at Key and Habitat for Humanity was formed. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity's work is accomplished at the community level by affiliates—independent, locally run, nonprofit organizations. Each affiliate coordinates all aspects of Habitat home building in its local area—fund raising, building site selection, partner family selection and support, house construction and mortgage servicing.
Key’s juniors labor alongside their teachers and volunteer contractors on daylong rehabilitation projects in the community, working directly with the families that are slated to buy the homes. In addition to these Saturday builds, Key students have orchestrated many successful fundraising events for Habitat, and have had first-hand experience learning about lobbying Congress for affordable housing programs.
